Beyond The Surface
Lake Carezza, Trentino, Italy. Aerial view of Lake Carezza and Egaâs Valley. Although it is a natural lake, Lake Carezza experiences significant variations in its water level. The lake primarily receives water from internal springs and runoff from melting winter snow. A large part of the surrounding forest has been destroyed by Storm Vaia, an extreme weather phenomenon caused by climate change. The loss of large areas of trees near the lake impacts its fragile and unique environment. At the same time, Lake Carezza is one of the most visited places in the Alps, a real icon of the Dolomites, with most postcards depicting this fairy-tale landscape. Here, the disproportion between the impacts of mass tourism and the health of the natural environment is particularly evident.
