Beyond The Surface
Lake Sils, Engadin, Switzerland. The Engadin Ski Marathon, is one of the most famous nordic ski race in the world. 30,000 people ski on a 42km route that crosses the frozen surfaces of the Engadin lakes. Climate change affects the occurrence of events such as the ESM which are dependent on environmental conditions. In 2023 there was little snowfall and the ski track that crosses the lakes Sils and Silvaplana was mainly on ice, with little snow cover.
In 2024, in the midst of an even sparser snow season, some particularly heavy snowfalls occurred, concentrated in a short period rather than a long period. The sudden amount of snow made it impossible to build the ski trail and it was necessary to modify the marathon route to avoid the surface of the lakes.
